The candidate for the post of Prime Minister of Great Britain, Rishi Sunak, suggested that London should include the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) among terrorist organizations and called for sanctions against Iran after the attack on British writer Salman Rushdie in New York. His words are reported by The Telegraph newspaper.
He stated the urgent need for a new, strengthened nuclear deal and tougher sanctions, stressing that in the absence of results, it is worth considering whether the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) has reached an impasse. "The brutal knife attack on Salman Rushdie should be a wake—up call for the West, and the Iranian reaction to the attack strengthens the arguments in favor of banning the IRGC," Sunak added.
On August 12, Rushdie was attacked during his speech in New York. The writer was stabbed and was taken to the hospital by helicopter. He was connected to an artificial lung ventilation machine (ventilator), and his condition was declared as disappointing.
US President Joe Biden commented on the incident, saying that he was shocked and saddened. He said that he prays for the recovery of the writer and thanked everyone who helped.
